How you can automate to handle your e-commerce demands!

Tucked away in upstate New York, the order fulfillment center of a major electronics manufacturer was humming along. Conveyor belts whisked over 850,000 packages annually from one department to another. Employees moved through the distribution center, picking and packing repair parts to fulfill customer orders.
While all seemed well on the distribution center’s floor, management knew significant challenges lay ahead. Demand for electronic components was increasing; the global market is expected to reach $233 billion by 2020, driven by the growing use of smart devices in the industrial, automotive, health care, and transportation industries. Meanwhile, this company’s operational practices were behind those of competitors’ regarding efficiency and per-unit packaging costs. They would either have to raise prices or become more efficient to maintain profitability.
Raising prices, however, wasn’t an option given the industry. “They provide replacement parts for business accounts,” Lou Suffern, Automation Specialist Director at Sealed Air Product Care, explains. “The industry dictates quick turnaround and competitive pricing. They have to charge a price that is comparable to competitors in the space.”
Their only option was to reduce their order fulfillment costs without increasing headcount. Labor was the biggest cost contributor in their pick and packaging costs, as it is with many companies within the consumer goods industry. Indeed, 44 percent of consumer goods companies reported that skilled labor was one of the most significant resource challenges, according to the Global Resource Challenges Report.
Adding more labor to meet the increasing demand would not help the company remain competitive in their industry. They needed an innovative solution that would allow for greater throughput and help keep per-unit pack costs down.
“Automation was the answer,” Suffern says. “While their employees were well-trained and highly competent, automation is typically a more accurate and efficient solution that could also increase the shipment velocity within their fulfillment center.”  Not only that, but automation would free up valuable employee time and energy for other aspects of the operation. The company could reallocate labor from packaging duties to other activities within the distribution center, such as picking and shipping.
As online ordering continues to increase, companies need automation
The problem was that their previous packaging solution, which relied on standard air pillows, could not be automated. Beyond that, standard air pillows were costing more in shipping as well (costs are largely based on the dimensional weight of packages and standard air pillows require larger boxes to accommodate them).
In 2011, this electronics company approached Sealed Air at an industry tradeshow to learn about possible solutions. They were mostly interested in hearing more about the I-Pack®automated packaging system, which had launched earlier that year.
The I-Pack automated packaging system was designed to minimize shipping, consumable, and operating costs in fulfillment operations while optimizing productivity. The system calculates the right-size packaging in real-time, which reduces freight costs and eliminates waste. Optional shipping label and packing list invoice printing and application can further increase productivity and efficiency within order fulfillment operations.
“After learning more and seeing a demo of I-Pack, the manufacturer decided it was time to replace their packing solution,” Suffern says. “We worked together to develop a tailored and comprehensive solution that matched their exact needs, which included the label print and apply, and invoice insertion capabilities.”
As a result, the company has reduced packaging time by 35 percent, streamlining their operations and reducing the manual interaction with the packaging process. As a result, the fulfillment center is now handling more packages per hour.
In the process, the automated packaging system also reduced the size of their boxes, which eliminated an estimated 34,000 kg of air pillows annually and cut dimensional weight by 20 percent. Eliminating void fill and improving shipment efficiency reduced CO2 emissions by an estimated 140,000 kg and also provided an estimated annual savings of over $1.6 million.

4 things you should consider before getting your next strech wrapper!

4 Things You Must Consider When You Pick Your Stretch Wrapper

Posted by Whitney Morris

Choosing the right semi-automatic stretch wrapper for the right setting can be tricky, unless you consider the loads being wrapped. While there are several different models and factors to choose from, there are two basic styles to consider: a turntable stretch wrapper and a straddle stretch wrapper. The deciding factor is the construction and makeup of your pallet loads.
On a turntable stretch wrapper, the load spins around on a turntable, while the film delivery system moves up and down, dispensingthe stretch film. A turntable typically spins between 12 – 15 revolutions per minute, so a pallet load has to be stable and solidly built, with the weight of the load evenly distributed.

With a straddle stretch wrapper, the load remains still while the film delivery system rotates around the pallet, moving up and down to distribute the film. This is useful for light and unstable loads that might fall apart while the pallet is rotating. It's also better for very heavy loads that weigh more than 5,000 pounds. There are turntables that can handle up to 5,000 pounds on a single pallet, but once you get beyond that, it is highly recommended that you use a straddle stretch wrapper.

Turntable stretch wrappers can handle the majority of stretch wrapping applications. Our customers overwhelmingly purchase the turntable stretch wrapper vs. the straddle. Nine out of every ten stretch wrappers sold are the turntable model.

Another consideration is floor space. A turntable wrapper is portable, because you can always move it, if the need arises. They fit nicely between dock doors, which is a popular location for semi-automatic stretch wrappers. A straddle wrapper is more permanent because you need to anchor it to the floor.

A straddle stretch wrapper also takes up more floor space because of the rotation of the wrap arm and supporting frame work. You need a wider floor space for clearance around the arm. The turntable can be placed in smaller areas with access for forklifts carrying pallet loads.

When ceiling height is an issue, the turntable stretch wrapper can be a better solution. Turntable stretch wrappers are typically shorter than a straddle wrapper with equal wrap height capacities.

Budget is the final consideration. Turntable stretch wrappers typically range from $5,000 to $15,000, while straddle wrappers are more expensive starting at $17,500 and up.

If you're having trouble deciding between a turntable and a straddle stretch wrapper, you can always call your Lantech representative to help you decide which model is best for you.

Making Decisions In The Pharma Cold Chain

Source: Life Science Leader
By Fred Olds
For the pharma industry, the challenges of cold chain transport continue to grow. The consequence of error or omission can be serious for patient safety — and company financial viability.

Technology has made both the health products and the capability to transport and monitor them in transit more complex. Mark Mohr, manager of product development and specialty sales for Continental Airlines, says logisticians welcome new technology to improve efficiency, but are alert for unintended consequences. For instance, to reduce weight and increase fuel economy, composite material is replacing aluminum in new airframes. Aluminum transfers heat better than composite by a factor of 20% to 200%. This change in material could result in a critical temperature difference that affects the efficacy of pharmaceuticals in transit with his airline. Pharma has to rely on transportation service providers to resolve questions like this and ship products under the strict conditions needed to preserve efficacy. The ultimate responsibility, however, still falls on the pharma company.

Planning
“There is never enough planning,” says Bob Gahan, VP Global Sales – Healthcare for DB Schenker Inc., and planning needs to start as early as possible. Each shipment is a singular experience regardless of how often it’s been done before. Gahan says unexpected events have a way of nudging critical steps in plans. During his daughter’s spring break in April 2010, Gahan had planned time with his family. Unexpectedly, much of European airspace was closed by the eruption of Mount Eyjafjallajökull in Iceland. He recalls using contingency plans to reroute shipments on his cell phone while attending his daughter’s lacrosse games.

At the Boston Marathon, he received a call to secure an urgent delivery of blood product to Europe. Passenger flights were not operating. The only option was to charter a 767 all-cargo freighter. Spain was open, but overburdened with other rerouting. Late that evening after a day of coordination between the United States and Europe, the manufacturer and Gahan agreed on an alternative option. Leipzig was open, and the manufacturer had enough resources there to arrange receipt of the product. Working with governmental agencies, manufacturer reps obtained landing rights for Leipzig in 6 hours under a “medical emergency,” normally a five-day process.

You win with our Packaging Management Program!!

Packaging Management Program (PMP)

Who

A meat processor to restaurants and wholesale markets with $7M in revenue and a $350,000 packaging spend.

The problem

The customer was saddled with excess and obsolete inventories, straining their working capital and cash flow resources. This led to a lack of space for efficient operations, storage of finished goods, or expansion. Their costs were skyrocketing—from labor to processing to machinery and equipment.

How we solved it

SupplyOne worked with key stakeholders to outline a plan rooted in our PMP. We introduced new manufacturing partners for primary packaging, including Flair Packaging, Xtraplast, and Next Generation Films.

Here’s why the customer is smiling

Beginning by significantly reducing inventory and SKUs, we improved the customer’s overall inventory management. This led to a cost avoidance of $65,000 in equipment and a $70,000 cash flow improvement. We improved their packaging integrity and dramatically reduced their leaker rate. With their new operational efficiency, the plant manager and key employees were given more time to focus on higher-impact matters.
